Chapter Fourteen

James sat on the King size bed he shared with Kiki and fiddled with the small figurine she had dropped on her way in last night. He had been unpacking their things while she took care of business at Downey Industries and was just about to put the engagement ring back in his lock box when Kiki had come running through the door and gotten sick in their master toilet. Why she hadn’t used the bathroom downstairs he had no idea. But it had been a long trying few days and James had swallowed his questions and growing suspicions and suggested she tuck in early for the night. He had even shown what he felt was remarkable restraint and not looked through the banker’s accordion file she had tossed on their dresser.

But now James sat on their bed again, staring sightlessly, listening to Kiki throw up in the bathroom. He tried to concentrate on the fact that they were home and away from her obviously disapproving family and not on the fact his also disapproving (though nicer about it) family had invited themselves over for brunch today and certainly not on the sounds of her getting sick… again. James watched her come out of the bathroom, pulling her hair free of a butterfly clip and shaking it loose. She looked a little better, but still pale. She went into his walk-in closet that she had more or less completely taken over, and rustled around for something without saying anything to him. He carefully set the figurine of mother and child on the dresser next to her family collage and fiddled with the string tie of the folder, looping and unlooping it.

“Kiki… I got to thinking… it’s been a while since you had your period hasn’t it? I mean, I know you haven’t had one since you moved in with me and that was six weeks ago,” James said in what he hoped was a non-confrontational manner.

Silence.

“Kiki?”

She came back out and stood nervously at the edge of the closet. She had changed into a loose summer dress and with her hair down around her shoulders and no makeup on she looked about twelve. It made him feel old and lecherous.

“You know, James, I’ve been really stressed out about this trial and Daddy being missing and—”

“Don’t do that! Don’t lie to me! Not about something this important. Are you pregnant, Katherine?”

Her bottom lip trembled and her eyes filled with tears. She swallowed like she was keeping sick down.

“No, I don’t know, no,” Kiki answered with a rapid shake of her head, but her hands betrayed her as she crossed them over her lower abdomen. He closed his eyes and absorbed the shock of the news.

“How long have you known?” James asked, calling her bluff.

She sighed. He opened his eyes. She was staring off into space, little tear drops falling on her cheeks. He cleared his throat. She sent him a little glare and stomped her foot. Clearly this script wasn’t going as she had it planned in her mind.
